Nooruz Holiday

Date: March 21st, 2017 – Tuesday
Location: everywhere in Kyrgyzstan
Description: Nooruz (meaning “new day” in Persian) is one of Kyrgyzstan’s biggest holidays celebrating spring and sort of a Central Asian new year. Nowadays Nooruz is a fun festive party in big city squares with music, dancing, and lots of traditional costumes. During Nooruz usually a special dish called ‘Sumulook’ is cooked, which appears like porridge made from millet and barley. As this day is of vernal equinox – the day usually symbolized by the sun and its significance, some traditional villagers light up fire and jump over it to gain purification of heart, mind and soul.

Jazz Festival

Date: April 9th-11th, 2017
Location: Bishkek
Description: 12th annual spring jazz festival full of music and fun. Musicians come from not only Kyrgyzstan but from countries as far as Italy, Switzerland, and Belarus to play not just saxophones, trumpets and basses, but even electric guitars and temir komuz (Jew’s harps).

Russian Orthodox Easter

Date: April 16th, 2017 – Sunday
Location: northern Kyrgyzstan
Description: Midnight masses, colored Easter eggs, and specially baked cylinder-shaped Easter cakes/breads frosted on top and covered with sprinkles are all on order for this holiday that’s especially celebrated in Bishkek’s large Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox church on Jibek Jolu. For the faithful Russian remnants in Kyrgyzstan, Easter is regarded as their most important religious festival to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the cross.

Victory Day

Date: May 9th, 2017 – Thursday
Location: all over Kyrgyzstan
Description: Celebrations are held usually in main squares or at memorial statues in the morning honoring veterans from World War 2 with flowers, medals, photos, and patriotic speeches. Bishkek has an annual military parade and there are usually dances, concerts, and medals that follow the official ceremonies.

Orozo Ait Holiday (Eid-al-Fitr “Day of Sacrifice” marking end of Ramadan)

National Uzbek cuisine festival

Description: Uzbek cuisine cooking and demonstration of national dishes. You will learn to prepare traditional dishes of Kyrgyz and Uzbek cuisine and will see the folk concert hosted by CBT Jalalabad.

Yak & National Horse Games Festival

Date: July 22nd, 2017 – Saturday
Location: Sary-Mogol village, Chong-Alay Region
Description: National horse games including Ulak-Tartysh, Kyz-Kuumai, Tyiyn-Enmei, and Er-Enish. There is also a folklore show and Kyrgyz cuisine hosted by by CBT Sary-Mogol ( 0556 092 627). The 500 som fee includes lunch and participation in all activities.

Description: Demonstration how to make kurak and terme plus national handicrafts. Master-class for participants. A folklore show will be put on by CBT Jalalabad.

Birds of Prey Festival

Location: Jaichy yurt camp, south shore of Issyk-Kul Lake near Kok-Sai Village

Kyrgyz Independence Day

Date: August 31st, 2017 – Thursday
Location: All over Kyrgyzstan
Description: Traditional dancing and music in every city and sometimes a fireworks show. In Bishkek, a kokpar game in the hippodrome is a major draw.

Kurman Ait Holiday (Eid al-Adha or “Feast of Sacrifice”)

Date: September 1st, 2017 – Friday
Location: All of Kyrgyzstan
Description: Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah’s (God’s) command to sacrifice his son Ishmael but replace the sacrifice with an animal. The town center fills up with men who listen to a sermon and pray then return to their homes for big meals shared with friends and relatives while some also visit the graves of their ancestors.

World Nomadic Games

Date: NOT UNTIL 2018
Location: Cholpon Ata, Issyk Kol Lake
Description: Lots of nomadic horse games including Alysh (Kyrgyz: Алыш)- a kind of belt wrestling, Salburun (Kyrgyz: Салбурун)- a sport mixing falconry, mounted archery and hunting assisted by Taigan dogs, Shagai, Horse racing (Kyrgyz: Ат чабыш), Er enish (Kyrgyz: Эр эңиш), Toguz korgool (Kyrgyz: Тогуз коргоол), Kourach, and Kok-boru (Kyrgyz: Көк бөрү)- a sport similar to Buzkashi, where polo riders fight to deposit a headless goat carcass into a barrel. These games are super popular in all of Central Asia complete with Olympic-like rivalries that expanded to 23 sports offerings and 40 countries being represented in 2016.
